Why Choose Bamboo Flooring?

  • Bamboo is not actually made from hardwood floor material, but rather natural bamboo grass strove together to create the density and durability of an every day hardwood floor. Bamboo Flooring has become the trending choice for hardwood flooring enthusiasts as the actual plant itself is a renewable energy resource which can be re-harvested every five years for optimum environmental benefits. It may take other wood species over one-hundred years to reach the same levels of maturation. Bamboo floors have been used for already thousands of years in the construction industry in Asia, and now the western markets in the United States and Europe have recently discovered the benefits behind Bamboo Flooring.

Bamboo Flooring Variety

  • There are several type of bamboo floors each created a little bit differently. Bamboo Flooring types are available with both a horizontal and vertical structure.
  • Strand Woven Bamboo is manufactured to gain a stronger and tougher floor. This type of floor creates a much tougher and durable hardwood floor when compared with regular Bamboo Flooring. Strand Woven Bamboo Flooring is available in immense variations of styles and colors including Natural and Carbonized stains.
  • Natural Bamboo Flooring can be characterized to produce very light toned color stains, giving the bamboo flooring its inherited natural and earthy look of botanical bamboo. Natural Bamboo Flooring looks relatively similar to maple and beach stains.
  • Carbonized Bamboo Flooring has a darker color tone when compared to natural bamboo colors. This is due to the color change reaction in the process of boiling bamboo which gives carbonized bamboo floors a more dark oak tone.
  • Although the natural color variation is not fully customizable like other hardwood flooring, a lot of customers still choose Bamboo Flooring for its unique design, texture, and colors which present many different advantages that other hardwood flooring styles cannot acquire. Many find using a wood stain effective to creating a particular tone of color which suites their taste.

How Bamboo Flooring is Made?

  • After five years growing and maturation the bamboo logs are commonly known as “dead weight” and are ready to be harvested. All of our WoodCrafters Bamboo Floors are made from mature bamboo plants, aged for at least 6 years. This process guarantees more stability and durability over time.
  • The manufacturing of Bamboo Floors begins with slicing the bamboo pieces into very thin strips of equal dimensions. Natural Bamboo Floors strips need to be boiled, in order to eliminate sugars, starch and insects from the material.
  • Carbonized Bamboo Floor strips must go through a process called Carbonization. In this process the bamboo strips are steamed under pressure, giving the Carbonized Bamboo a darker color, but it also reduces the overall toughness of the bamboo floor.
  • After the purifying process, the bamboo strips go to a kiln dry, which reduces the moisture levels of the bamboo wood. At this stage, before the gluing process, the bamboo is usually treated with preservative materials.
  • The next stage consists of gluing the bamboo strips together. The glue used for this process is usually a Urea-Formaldehyde (UF) Adhesive. The bamboo strips are then pressed by a machine with pressure levels of more than 1200 PSI. This process makes it so that the Bamboo strips connect and attach to a hardwood board. In this binding process, strips that are assembled face up create a Horizontal floor construction, while strips that are assembled side by side result in a Vertical Floor construction.
  • Strand Woven Bamboo Flooring is stronger and tougher than Natural and Carbonized bamboo flooring. Its durability is gained through a pressing and gluing process, where the Bamboo strips are exposed to extremely high pressure, even higher than natural bamboo flooring.
  • The last stage of manufacturing bamboo floor is of course the finishing and milling process. After coating the bamboo with 8 Layers of Aluminum Oxide, the raw boards go into a milling process. The end product is a Prefinished Bamboo Floor Plank, constructed exactly like the other hardwood floors, using the tongue and groove profile to facilitate the floor installation.

Can I Refinish My Bamboo Flooring?

  • Simple Answer – Yes! All Bamboo Flooring can be re-finished and re-sanded again, depending on the thickness of the specific floor style. Bamboo floors can also be stained with another color type by using a wood stain.

Bamboo Flooring Installation Tips

  • Installing a Bamboo Hardwood Floor is essentially the same process as when installing Solid Hardwood Flooring. Like Engineered Flooring, Bamboo Floors can also easily be installed on concrete surfaces.
  • The most common methods are to nail or staple the hardwood flooring. Bamboo flooring can also be glued-down using Flooring Adhesive. We do not recommend using water based adhesive with a bamboo floor.
  • It is also strongly advised to check the installation room for prior moisture, for moisture can cause the bamboo flooring to crack and cup, which may eventually ruin the entire floor. It is recommended to let the bamboo acclimate to the room temperature and humidity of where it is being installed. Though not required, leaving the hardwood boxes open for at least three days before initiating the floor installation will get the bamboo flooring adjusted to the optimum moisture levels and room temperature.
